William Delmar
Weaver was born April 15, 1900 in rural North Dakota, USA, to Delmar Scott Weaver and his wife Mary (Kopstad) Weaver.
"Del" as he was called by family and friends immigrated to Canada with his family in the mid 1900’s to the area around Delisle, Sask. Del met and married May Gelloway on Aug 21, 1921. As a young married couple, they moved up north to the Rayside district, north of Shellbrook, and started their family. Over the years, they had a family of six children: Esther (Alec Anderson, Arnold Fisher), Jean (Fred Anderson), William (deceased as a baby), Kenneth (Bess Telfer), Elwood (Linda Brown), Ila (Doyle Couldwell). The family homesteaded in the Lone Spruce district and farmed there until Del enlisted in the Army. Del enlisted on March 10, 1941 at Saskatoon, Sask. Del took his training at Huntington, Ont., Farnham, Ont., St. Hyacinthe, PQ, St. John’s, PQ, Montreal, PQ, and Borden, Ont. He was transferred overseas May 5, 1942 and arrived in the United Kingdom May 12, 1942. On July 20, 1942, Del(Service #L-53655) was posted to the #8 Recce Canadian Dept. and disembarked for France.
Del was classified as a Trooper and served on the recognisance unit and saw action in France, Belgium and Germany. Del received the 1939-1945 Star War Medal (France and Germany), the Star Defence Medal and the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal and Clasp.
Del was discharged from the Army on Oct. 10, 1945 at Regina, Sask.
Del passed away Aug.26, 1960.
* As a postscript, I must add that Delmar was technically too old to join the Army as he was 41 years old when he enlisted. On his initial paperwork to join the Army, his birth date was listed as April 15, 1906, with his birth place as Delisle, Sask., which is not true. Del wanted to serve his country anyway he could and this he did well.
