USS Blue Ridge
Parents: Arthur Harold Sutherland (b. 29 October 1897) and Opal M Sunderland (b about 1903) A H Sunderland was the brother of Willard Sunderland q.v.
Arthur Vernon Sunderland was born 17 July 1924 in Kansas, possibly Severy, Greenwood. He enlisted in the US Navy on 26 November 1942, aged 18. After training he was appointed as a Machinist’s Mate to the USS Blue Ridge, an Appalachian Class Amphibious Force Command Ship.
AV served continuously on the Blue Ridge until his discharge about January 1946 The Blue Ridge was deployed in the Asiatic-Pacific Theater and participated in the following campaigns: Leyte landings, 20 to 26 October 1944 and Lingayen Gulf landings, 9 to 15 January 1945.
During his tour of duty, AV was promoted to Petty Officer 2nd class.
AV was married to Linda R and they possibly had a daughter Janine who may have married Dolbert B Peters.
AV and his family continued to reside in Kansas.
AV died in 1991 and Linda in 1992.
