JOHN ADAMS and RACHEL ELIZA ADAMS Née CORNEIL

John Adams was born on 12 December 1858 in Emily, Victoria, Ontario to Francis Adams (1816-1880) and Elizabeth (1817-1889). Francis and Elizabeth were both born in County Fermanagh, Ireland. John had seven siblings, William (1836-1906), Francis (1840-1902), Th [sic] (b 1840), Eleanor/Ellen (1844-1886), Thomas (b 1848), James (1851-1898) and Robert (b 1851). Since the older children including Ellen were born in Ireland and the remainder in Emily, Victoria we may infer that the family came to Canada around 1850 during the Irish Potato Famine.

Francis farmed in Emily, Ontario and generally the children remained in this region of Canada. John married Rachel Eliza Wilson on 10 March 1880 in Emily, Ontario. Rachel was born on 20 November 1857 to David Corneil (1814-1896) and Jane Cunningham (1817-1906). Both her parents were from Limerick, Ireland and married in Ida, Durham County, Ontario, Canada in 1839. Rachel had thirteen siblings, Samuel (1839-1925), James Cornelius (1841-1923), Belinda (1843-1936), John Jacob (1844-1848), Charles (1846-1923), Jane (1848-1848), Annie (1849-1919), George (1850-1930), David (1852-1929), Barbara (1854-1928), Robert Francis (1855-1951), Hiram (1861-1944) and Elizabeth (1863-1942).

After their marriage, John and Rachel lived in Lindsay, Victoria South, Ontario where John was an agent for a farm implement company. They had three daughters, Ethel (b 1882), Ruby (b 1884) and Florence (1886-1956). In 1901 they were living in Winnipeg, Manitoba and John was still employed in the farm implements business. By 1910 they were living in Springfield, Ohio, USA but returned to Canada to live at 333 5th Ave N, Saskatoon in 1921. John worked for Cockshut Plow as a salesman, progressing to manager. They continued to live in Saskatoon until at least 1924.

No further records have been found for them, but it is possible that John died on 1 March 1945 and Rachel died on 23 March 1952, as two individuals with these names are buried in the same plot (19-G0575) in Elmwood Cemetery, Winnipeg.
