William Albert Dawber was born on 8 April 1874 in Bolton, Lancashire, England to Thomas Dawber (1836-1902) & Ellen Stott (1839-1908). William had two sisters, Jane (1860-1949) & Mary Ann (1870-1871) and six brothers, Edward (1861-1943), Walter (1864-1949), John (1867-1935), Thomas (1868-1938), James Roberts (1872-1911) & Hsarry (1884-1959). William’s father and several brothers were bricklayers, but about age 16, William entered into an apprenticeship to learn the plumbing trade. William married Emily Brown Pilling on 4 October 1899 in Bolton Parish Church. Emily was born in 1877 in Bolton to George Pilling (1844-1890) & Ellen Brown (1853-1906). William & Emily lived with her parents at 22 Lime St, Bolton.
William’s elder brothers, Edward & Walter emigrated to the United States around 1886, eventually settling in New York. William and his brother Harry sailed on SS ‘Umbria’ from Liverpool in 1905, arriving in New York on 2 July to join Walter who was living at 321 Newtown Rd, Queens, New York. A few months later, William returned to England arriving in Liverpool on 28 September 1905. Harry stayed on in New York, married Mary Elizabeth Peck (1884-1973) about 1910 and moved to Connecticut.
Back in Bolton, William & Emily ran a grocery shop at 24 & 26 Lyon St, but in 1914 William sailed for Canada, arriving in Montreal on 8 May; Emily followed a few months later arriving in Quebec on 19 September. The couple settled in Winnipeg, Manitoba where William reverted to his trade of plumber. By 1921 they had moved to Boniface, Manitoba and William was a sectionman on the railroad. Later they retired to Battle River, Alberta where William died sometime between 1940 & 1945.
