THIRD AVENUE METHODIST CHURCH QUILT

A CANADIAN RED CROSS QUILT

Another quilt?

ALICE “MURIEL” TULLY

Alice "Muriel" Tully was born on 16 July 1897 in Parry Sound, Ontario to George Henry Tully (1867-1965) and Alice Maud Carlton (1866-1922). Her siblings were Gertrude Pearle (b 1899), Lillian Winnifred (1901-1980) and George Rutledge Carleton (b 1903). The Tully family was enumerated in Chapman, Ontario in 1901 and Thunder Bay, Ontario in 1911. They were enumerated in Camp Sewell, Winnipeg, Manitoba in 1916 and at #10-484 Sherbrooke, Winnipeg, Manitoba in 1921. Muriel married Charles Hughes on 12 March 1921.

There is no proof that this Muriel signed the quilt in about 1918. However, her name and that of May Shaw were signed right under one another on the quilt and in very close proximity to the signatures of Harry V and Bessie H Clarke. In the Winnipeg 1916 census, there was a May Shaw boarding with George Terry Rogers and his daughter Bessie (who later married Harry Clarke). May, Bessie and Muriel were approximately the same age and lived in the same are of Winnipeg and so could easily have been friends. In census records, the name Muriel was most often used. It is only a guess that the Clarkes and the two girls came to Saskatoon for some reason and happened to end up signing the quilt. An exhaustive search for Muriel Tully resulted in only this one candidate.
